I'd say that you need to replace your battery.

It's difficult to be more specific as you don't say whether you are talking about a mobile, phone, a power drill, or a laptop computer. You posted in "General Hardware/Input Devices", so perhaps it's a mouse or a keyboard, or just some rechargeable batteries. A manufacturer and model would help.

But, in the end, if it says "Replace your battery" that seems fairly clear.

Really kind of a gamble. I'd guess battery but you may have other issues here too.

I'd just buy a new laptop.

I don't know what is getting really hot but you need to either tell us more or dispose of it.

Hang up and live.

If this is regarding a laptop or netbook.....

Laptop main batteries usually work as they should for a year or so, then they begin to rapidly deteriorate. From what I've seen, by two years they cannot be charged to anywhere near their full capacity, and it gets worse after that.
They often develop internal shorts when they are older. If the battery gets HOT rather than just warm after you have attempted to charge it for at least a half hour, or after you have been using the laptop for a while with the AC adapter plugged in, it's definitely internally shorted and you must replace it. Internally shorted batteries getting too hot have been known to cause the laptop to catch on fire.

It should be replaced after no more than two years in any case if your're using the computer on the battery alone a lot.

You don't necessarily have to buy the computer brand's battery - there are lots of clone batteries out there that cost less that will fit in your computer, and no main batterry for a laptop or netbook has a warranty longer than a year in any case.
