I posted a message a few weeks ago when my drive went bad. I've installed a new one and put the old one in as a slave. I'm trying to recover as much off the old one as possible, included my Outlook PST file. When trying to copy it I'm getting a CRC error and the copy stops. I've also tried zipping the file and that failed also.

Any other suggestions on recovering this file? Do my odds of recovering the file go up if the drive runs longer? Would Norton Disk Doctor fix the error or make it permanently unrecoverable? TIA.

Did the hard drive fail meaning a hardware crash? If it's failing the SMART test or having a physical problem it might take some luck to retrieve data. For example, if the area of the hard drive where your Outlook PST file is stored is in bad shape then it'll be difficult.

You could try the "Get Data Back for NTFS" program which I use more for partitions going corrupt. Do a google for the program and their site will show at the top for the searches.

If the hard drive is having a physical problem causing the errors, then you'll have to try recovery methods as a last resort. One I have tried is putting the hard drive in a ziplock bag and storing it in the freezer for a few hours. Then hooking it back up as a slave to your computer and QUICKLY try to copy as many files as possible to another drive. It's worked a few times but is not guaranteed to succeed. Use at your own discretion. Hard drive data recovery businesses charge anywhere from $500-$1200 to rebuild bad hard drives that would be the only sure way to get the data back.

en, I suggest you send the harddrive to professional data recovery company. They usually backup your whole harddrive and ensure your data safe.
