Comment:

I re-installed the operating system on my son's computer when he screwed it up (probably virus related). When I re-installed I was given the option to archive the previous data for access after the installation, but I have no idea how to actually access that information. I just want to access the word documents (I forgot about backing them up first) - can someone help me with this??

Thanks!

If it still exists then try the search for files option. Use the name or file extension in the all files search.

If so then you may need to re-install a program to read that file type.

If not then you would have to search the hard drive with a more advanced tool that can read the normally un-readable areas of the disk or even try to unpartition.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

I do have "Cabinet Files" on my "C" drive, they are blue and compressed - so how do I open them?

When I open a cabinet file I get 5 files:
apr2005_d3dx9_25_x64 a setup file
d3dx9_25.dll an application extension
d3dx9_25.64 a security catalog
d3dx9_25.64 a setup file
infinst an application

Are these the right files and how do I open them if they are?
Thanks,

Stephaninie

I cannot say unless I know exactly what type of CD it is that you have used to reinstall Windows. Is it Gateway Recovery CD? Is it OEM XP installation CD? Or is it XP Installation CD?

I think* they are some sort of video files or drivers hence the "dx9" and "x64" and "apr 2005" being the date of it. Erm also go to Users and see if there is your old user name there aswell?

It was a Gateway Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 With Update Rollup 2 Operating System Disc. I followed the instructions to re-install the operating system.

Under Documents and Settings I have a folder for both the Administrator and Owner, and these Cabinet Files are located under the Owner folder -- if that helps.

To 02Coled - yes, they are probably video files. Apparently my son saved his DOW game files -- sorry for the confusion on my part.

So these are not the missing files, I'll keep looking. I did find a Recovery Partition (Drive "D")- but I can't access it. I'm not sure if this is where my data is stored or not.

Thank you for your help!

Drive D is Gateway system recovery partition. Do not touch it.

I checked out the manual (see link below) for your Gateway model. If you have restored your computer to the original configuration, all your previous files are irreversibly erased, which is why you cannot find it anywhere. For the manual below, refer to page 49.

Stephaninie, word documents are quite small, so you may want to try file scavenger:
http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm
Download the demo and look for .doc files.
They allow you a certain many kbs to recover each time for free, so you may find and recover your missing files. I have used it many times with good success after a PC has been reformatted. Have a great new year!!!

Some HELP in posting on Cnet plus free progs and instructions Glad to Help!
