What are the free options for recording sound (through a microphone) on the PC. Sound recorder seems very basic. Is audacity a free option or is it only for converting audio file types? Are there any free programs better than sound record?

thanks

Audacity will work for you, and it's free.

you have varieties of programs that could help you but the thing i need to know is the purpose
of the program. if you want the program to edit the audio file and conversion i suggest Sound forge audio studio.
