Solved Recommended wattage for custom-build PC

Specs: Windows 7
My build is as follows:

i7-2700k wishing to overclock to only 3.9 ghz (doing computational stuff as well)
EVGA superclocked 560 ti
Kingston Hyper X SSD 120 gb
Western Digital 500 gb 7200 RPM, SATA 3.0 gb/s, 64 mb cache
Cooler Master 212
16 gb DDR 3 1600 mhz ram
Typical ASUS 24x DVD-RW/CD-RW

I was thinking 750w would be sufficient, but I just want to be sure from the better informed.

More than sufficient. You could probably get away with a lower wattage unit but you need to know what to look for. Do NOT choose a PSU based on wattage alone, you need to consider ALL the specs. A decent quality PSU should have:

- a single high amperage +12v rail rather than multiple +12v rails
- rated 80% efficient or better
- active PFC (power factor correction)
- all the necessary plugs plus a few extra for future upgrades
- at least a 3 yr warranty
- made by a reputable manufacturer

That one has four 12 volt rails, avoid it. You should choose a single 12 volt rail so all of the amperage is always available. For example, if your video card requires more amperage than is available on the one 12 volt rail, it may be starved for power while other systems have more available than they need, but if all of your available amperage is always available to whatever system needs it, then that is definitely better. That is a little bit simplistic, but it shows you why we recommend a single 12 volt rail on your power supply. Choosing a power supply with 80% efficiency or better is mainly because in order to achieve 80% or better, they need to use better components and closer tolerances in designing, building, calibrating, and testing, therefore a better, more reliable product. The longer warranty because the manufacturer must then have more confidence in the quality of their product.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
