Rebuilding Old Computer

Specs: XP, 1ghz Celeron

I'd like to start by saying that I'm not trying to build a high end gaming machine. Just one that will be able to handle some of the newer ones.

Ok you saw that I have an emachines computer. It isn't great but gets the job done. Except for playing games. The newer ones are more powerful and thus demand a more powerful machine to play them. I don't play often but I'd like to be able to when I choose.

Which brings me to my point. I'd like to do a gradual upgrade or rebuilding, if you will, using some of the parts that I already have. I know I'd need a much faster cpu with a compatible motherboard. I'd assume I'd have to get a new case and a new power supply too. Now, if I did just that would I be able to use the rest of the parts from my current computer. Drives, cables etc.? I would then upgrade the other parts which I believe are easier to do one by one beginning with the video card.

If the answer is yes, what should I look for in a case, power, motherboard? Like I said before I'm not into building the fastest machine just a better one than I have.

Staying with Intel or switching to AMD ?
What case you got now Full or Micro ATX ?
How much are you willing to spend right now ?

Overall I'd suggest a cheap Socket 754 entry level combo with a medium-low end AGP video card.

for grafix, go somewhere between a geforce6200/radion x600 to a geforce 6600gt/radion x700. that is if you want to keep a small budget. but, what ever you do for the cpu, make sure you get a 64bit core if you plan to upgrade the cpu.

to answer your question about the drives and cables, you could keep them, and use them. but at anyrate, you will have to reinstall windows ir you get a new mobo and cpu.

p4 3.0ghz @ 222X15=3330mhz

Yes but be careful with video card to be sure mb takes pci express or 8 Agp etc...more posts on that here than anything. Andy why save old cables? They cost nothing and last like that. Drives can be transferred unless some cheapo bizarre cdrw will drive decent OS banans trying to locate. You have to remember Emachine is cheap and disposable, so what ius in it, accomodates that. A Wd hard drive will be a WD hard drive, but a cdrw, well finding that inexpensively is the "meat" of what they do and they have the bucks to make some piece of junk completely compatible with that one system only.

Assuming your old case can be reused, I suggest the following upgrade.

Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4 nForce4

CPU: AMD 64 3000+ (Venice core if you can)

RAM: 512 (Any brands will do)

Video card: Sapphire X600 PRO 128MB PCI-E
Don't go for 256MB, it's not worth it.

PSU: 350W
More than enough unless you really have a lot of hardware.
