I think your board comes with onboard sound so I would ck AC97 in BIOS first. Your MOBO should have come with a disc for drivers, try reloading the sound drivers and see if it comes back.

I had a simmalar problem with my KT3 Ultra 2 Raid, I update my AC97 Audio rebooted and had no sound, When i went to re-install my sound drivers from the motherboard cd, it told me no audio hardware detected, found out that the audio somehow had blown itself ( very strange that ) I had buy an Soundblaster Live to fix the sound and have had no problems since. as you have had it for xmas why don't you try changing the mobo, should solve your problem

Hope this helps

( try replacing your motherboard worked for me )

Do a system restore- go back a couple of days to before you d/l'd the stuff from MS.

Start-programs-accessories-system tools- system restore. Pick a date & restore. If this doesn't help you can always undo the restore.

Good luck!
