Hi,
Well, it seems my Mom's computer did have the worm. I downloaded the tool and had to run in safe mode and it finally deleted it. but the computer still wasn't working properly (it wouldn't even disconnect from the internet - had to manually shut down.) So I rebooted - did F8 - chose last known good configuration and now it seems to be doing pretty good. At least I'm not getting the low memory message when I try to send more than one email message.
But now it's giving me this message:
"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program."
Exactly what is this and how do I get rid of it please?
Thanks so much to everyone for all the good help,
Carol

Are you sure that the virus was deleted completely? Please tell us which virus your mom's pc got? Is it the Sobig virus? If so, click on this link for removal instructions.

Kevin.

Sure you can have all you want. :-)

seriously though. SVChost is a program that allows non executable dll files to run as service ergo it's name.

dll - dynamic linked library. Lists of similar commands used by many programs.

If SVCHost is erroring out then there is a damaged or altered DLL file in there somewhere. If you look at the services running you'll likely find several instances of it in the list. probably one for each DLL needed to provide a service of some kind.

If you don't get that error in a safe mode bootup, then you know its probably a service that's started in msconfig / start.

do start > run > sfc to scan for altered (corrupted) files on your system. But first do a thorough scandisk with auto error fix.
