My friends computer has a seagate 40GB and a NA61HA0 Maxtor 40GB (second drive) which has now decided to be a RAW 0 byte HDD. I don't know what has caused this but it would be great to recover her Data from this disc.

In windows i recieve an Error Message saying : The disc in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format it now? - Ofcourse i clicked no.

I have tried taking the battery out of the motherboard to clear the bios but that had no effect.

This is having a bad effect on her pc's performance also, taking 3-5 minutes to load the OS.

Was running fine a few days ago, and has become very sluggish over the past day.

Any help would be appreciated.

Knoppix, a live version of Linux may be able to read and copy the data from the second drive. Knoppix installs to and runs from a CDR. The download is 700MB so you need a fast internet connection or you can purchase a pre-configured CD for a few dollars. Google for Knoppix.

I'm not familiar with TESTDISK. You may want to check that program out to see if it is of any help.

In the meantime it would be a good idea to stop accessing that drive. Do you happen to know what file format was being used on that drive? FAT32 or NTFS? If the drive originally was in an older computer it may have been FAT32.

Are you sure about the model of the second drive? That number doesn't match anything.

Download SIW.exe and look under storage devices. Should yield a model number.

A lot of times if XP starts seeing a hdd partition as raw it is because the VBR (volume boot record) has an error. TESTDISK will check if the primary and it backup VBR are the same, if they are not select to overwrite the primary with backup.

Testdisk has a version for dos, XP and Linux. It is included in the Knoppix live cd. One should read the how to use.
