This has been going on for months and months I am to a point where I can no longer tolerate it…
My computer has basically turned into a time bomb. It is no longer reliable to use being of its random power-downs. I say ‘power-downs’ instead of ‘random reboots’ like most people because mine doesn’t come back up like most. In fact, I’m having to type the text of this post on a laptop, save it to disk, and then hurry and post it to the website with my faulty computer (only one with internet access) because it has become that unreliable. It shuts off at random, no warning, no pattern. I don’t even have to be doing anything. I may do it within one minute of startup, or, run for hours on end, but it always, eventually goes down.
I am using an Albatron kx400+ motherboard (with latest BIOS update), 256MB DDR RAM, 475w PS, and an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I am not sure what the bios frequency setting should be for CPU and RAM. I have searched the AMD website, Albatron, contacted Albatron, and combed the web over and still have not found recommended settings. They are set wrong, which could be causing these power offs and set as follows:

CPU SPEED DETECTED 1485
CPU RATION 13.5
SPEED SPECTRUM [ENABLED]
CPU CLOCK 110
DDR:CPU RATIO 2.00X
DDR SPEED (Strob/Sec) 220M
DEFAULT CPU VOLTAGE 1.650
CPU VOLTAGE 1.650
RAM VOLTAGE 2.5

I have recently replaced the old PS (a 350W) with a brand new 475W dual fan one, no change. I have swapped out HDDs, no change. The CPU is always at about 100-114 degrees.

The strangest thing about these power-offs is, I can not simply turn the system back on… I have to unplug the whole system, wait for the MOBO LED to discharge, and then plug it back in. If I plug it in without the power indactor LED discharging, it will not work but once it has lost all power, it will fire right up.
Let me know if any addition info is needed.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Guys
Jared

Try setting your FSB (CPU clock) to 133, and disable the spread spectrum. Spread spectrum enabled could cause system instability. With FSB at 133 and multiplier at 13.5, you will be running the proper 1795 Mhz for the Athlon XP 2200+. The DDR:CPU Ratio of 2.00 will give you the proper speed of 266 for DDR. I'm not sure of the proper VCore voltage (1.65), but my XP 2100+ runs at 1.78. If the other settings alone don't straighten things out, you might also try bumping up the CPU voltage to that value, if your mobo allows. HTH

Sounds like you are getting power surges in your outlets... Quick jolts of an extensive amount of electical current can definitely power off your computer. Surge protector is probley needed. That's the only thing I could think of. Hope it helps
