Solved Random PC Restarts While Gaming

January 3, 2015 at 20:44:25
Specs: Windows 8.1

My PC for some reason keeps restarting randomly while gaming. It does not do this while while on the net, listening to music etc only when gaming. I have tried updating drivers and BIOS and heat is not a problem (GPU temp of 79 Degrees and a CPU temp of 72 Degrees at the point of last restart)

Current build is
CPU – Intel core i7 4790,
Motherboard – MSI Z97 G45 Gaming,
GPU – XFX Radeon R9 290,
PSU – Thermal take Smart 750W, only 6 months old

Can anyone shed light on why this may be happening?

"Can anyone shed light on why this may be happening?"

It appears your system is overheating. The max Tcase temp for the i7-4790 is 72.72C. Check your heatsink/fan installation. Either the heatsink is dust clogged or it was installed improperly. Proper thermal paste application is critical to proper cooling, so if you used too much, too little, or oriented it incorrectly during placement (i7 uses the vertical line method), that could be the problem.

Another thing you might wanna do is disable the auto-restart feature:

I agree on the overheating, redo your heat sink installation:

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
