I bought a compaq presario V5305WM around christmas time in 2005. The computer just recently started experiencing screen freezes. I'm usually running speedfan and I'm starting to think the heat is finally getting to it. I run speedfan most the time the laptop is on. It usually runs between 58-68 degrees celcius. Monday I noticed it was acting strange though. The fan kept switching speeds and speedfan kept jumping the temperature up and down degrees. The highest it went was 87 degrees. I started moving the laptop around and it just dropped back down to what it normally does. Seems like since then its been freezing up. I'm guessing the I should take apart the laptop clean the dust out, rubbing alchohal the cpu and reapply thermal compound. I've disassembled this laptop before. There has never been void stickers anywhere on it. I still do have a month left on the warranty. I doubt its the software, because I havent installed anything. It does need a new copy of XP though because CHKDSK goes through 100,000 errors. Im thinking new copy of xp, plus a good clean out like I described before, but I'm open to all advice. I'd much rather not spend all weekend "Refurbishing" this thing.

Regarding dust in vents blow out with compressed air, most PC shops sell samll canisters.

Also you can use any XP CD to run CHKDISK /R from Recovery Console:
