Hello. I have a horrible problem. I need opinion about CRC errors (whats could be the cause). I`m having problem with unpacking rar,zip archives, every time it gaves me a cycle redundancy check errors.I tried different versions of winrar and winzip, i tried 7zip but it gave me same errors with all of them. So i thought its my RAM so i removed it and put new 1Gb ram sticks...but it gave me the same CRC error. Then i installed some other winxp sp 2 than i had when i bought my pc, but no luck, it showed again same CRC error on dl-ed archives (seems its random coz some of archives work). I completed the memtest86 and didn`t get any errors of ram. And yeah, my pc restarts 2-3 times a day with no reason. I`ve read on some tech forums that in most cases the problem is with the RAM, but in my case it seems it`s some other problem. So i wonder what kind of hardware problem could it be? Maybe HD? or motherboard? By the way i installed the Partition magic 8.05 and on it`s start, shows following error: Init failed: error 117 - Partition`s drive letter cannot be identified.(or its because of Acronis safe zone that i have).Still thats why it leads me to think that it`s some HDD problem. (scandisk didnt find any problems). So i`m giving up...and i think i need some of your opinion about this problem. Thanks!

If these are downloaded rars and zips,
I don't think it is a hardware issue.

If you downloaded the rars and zips it is most likely the files were not packed properly.

Are these on floppy or the hard drive?

Try making a rar and zip file of your own.

Just a bunch of files. Unrar or unzip them...
Bet you don't get crc errors.

First I would resolve the pc restarts.
Can you try another power supply?
Do you have a backup hard drive.

Seems like two separate issues.Bad rars and then a hardware problem.

It could be hardware related just in the fact that if your Hard drive has bad sectors they could be in the area your temp folder wants to store the downloads. I would delete all your temp files and temporary internet files, run chkdsk, then defrag your computer before you download any more of anything. You probably do not have to delete your cookies so you can leave those alone.

Thanks guys for your reply. Yeah, i tried to download the same archive files on another pc, on the same net provider and they worked excellent. So the problem is not in archived files...thats why i think that the problem is related only to my pc. (BTW, i tried to archive files up to like 800mb, and unpack them...there wasnt any problem). I tried downloading archived files with mozilla and with IE , same files same CRC errors (i even tried Download accelerator and still same crc errors). I also tried to download these files on different partitions...and no luck again. I cleared the temp files, defragment my disk and everything that came on my mind, and again without positive result. So i`m pretty sure that those RAR/ZIP archives arent corrupted, coz as i said they work on 3-4 other pc`s than mine. And yeah i`m laughing,i havent met this kind of problem till now :-) (as one of my friends said: maybe your pc is too fast to handle archived files) lol. Anyway thanks again for your effort, and i`ll need more opinions. Thanks.

If you have used PM8 to resize a partition there may be issues with cluster sizes or some other issue.

Well maybe its some cluster issue, but the problem is that i can`t even start partition magic...it shows me this on its start:Init failed: error 117 - Partition`s drive letter cannot be identified and terminates.I have SATA2 250GB HD, and i`ve heard rumors that there are some problems with them...but im not sure. So i haven`t any clue what could it be...

I have a WD250GB SATA II in the computer I am on now. There isn't any problem with it. Why did you use PM8 anyway?

Go to disk management in Windows and see how the partitions are reported there. You could also run error checking under properties in disk management.

Since you ran scandisk, I assume it's a FAT32 drive. I would suggest running scandisk 'thorough' on the drive. I would also run memtest86 overnight and see if it shows any errors.

Hehe no no, every partition is NTFS and i did Error-checking tool (i`m used to old things like win95/98), sorry my bad(no errors). And as i said memtest didn`t find any errors . :(
Maybe i should try with linux...to see how these archives will act on ext2/3 fs. (but i dont think it`s about file systems)...

"i`m used to old things like win95/98"

A man after my own heart. :-)

For NTFS run chkdsk /r to scan the complete drive.
I would still suggest running memtest86 overnight, if you haven't done that. A test of a few minutes will not pick pick up intermittent errors.

Ok guys, I really appreciate your help. It seems that the problem is solved. No CRC errors anymore :-).(and for 2 days testing no restarting by itself). And yeah :-) the problem probably is in hd, maybe bad sectors or something...So they (at the store where i bought my pc from) gave me new hdd, and now everything seems ok. Thanks again for your opinions.
