RAM What 2 look for

Could someone please quickly explain RAM Types and what i need to look for when buying extra ram for my PC.. For example what is buffered and unbuffered and different speeds etc.. does it matter all them manual to my motherboard say it that the RAM is PC-100 SDRAM DIMMS ( what will i need to look for when buying )

All help appreciated :-)

if you computer is old, look for low density ram with 16chips. if it's new, go for the high density, 32x4...
