CPU/Ram: Athlon 2.16Ghz/ 512Mb

Comment:

My computer takes 1 stick of 512mb of ram PC2700 333Hz kingston value ram. This is shared by an intergrated Nvidia Mx graphics card. I tried some unknown PC2700 333Hz 512Mb of ram, but the pc came up with a blue screen sometime after the windowds splash screen. So I assumed the ram was incompatible. I ran the Crucial scan hoping to find the compatible ram listings, but, it told me it could not find the type of time model computer I have. I can not find this either, I dont have a manual to look into. My question is, am I just restricted kingston value ram PC2700 333Hz?

I thank you in advance.

Hi
download & run http://www.cpuid.com/
this app gives you all the info on your cpu , memory fsb so you should be able to match other branded ram to your pc.

http://www.memtest86.com/
use memtest86 to test the other stick just to be sure its duff, "unknown" memory usually turns out to be key fob material.

Try samsung if still in doubt.

might be worth opening the pc case (when switched off) to see whatthe motherboard marking s are brand make, version etc

regards

It sounds like the ram you added is incompatible alright.

The ram failing a memory test does not necessarily mean it is "key fob material".
See response 3 in this:
http://www.computing.net/hardware/wwwboard/forum/42438.html

Whether it is unknown or not - which isn't the case here - has nothing to do with it - all that matters is whether it is compatible or not.

See if you can find the mboard model on your mboard - it is often in larger characters between the slots - you may have to move aside cables to find it.

If you can't find the mboard model, we need your bios string to see if we can identify your mboard and/or computer.

Go here, download BIOS AGENT.
Run BIOS AGENT to find your bios string.
- here's the link that downloads Bios Agent
http://download.esupport.com/biosagent/ba.exe

Tell us everything Bios Agent finds, and include any dashes, etc.
......

The cpuid utility may not give you enough information.
The critical thing that determines compatibility is which chipset is on the mboard, and sometimes, how it it is wired to the mboard, not so which cpu you are using, of what fsb the mboard has available.

I looked on the motherboard. I have found it is a KM18G PRO. It has integrated Nvidia geforce4 Mx.

KM18G Pro

Albatron KM18G Pro
There are two versions - KM18G Pro and KM18G Pro Ver. 2.0
Same except KM18G Pro Ver. 2.0 has TV-Out (one main chip with graphics in it may be a different number)

Kingston does not have listings for your brand.
You can email them and they can tell what will work in your mboard - I tried that and they do repond within a day or two.
Kingston memory sales (USA) sales@kingston.con
Kingston International sales (everywhere else) intlsales@kinston.com

You can look up which mboards work with the Kingston ram you have here, but they may not have listings for Albatron:
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partnum.asp?root=us

Crucial has listing for KM18G Pro here:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=RAM

Corsair has listings for this mboard - once you pick one it lists all the mboards it works in
http://www.corsair.com/

Memorygiant has listings for both KM18 Pro and KM18G Pro V.2.0 (the same ram, probably)
http://www.memorygiant.com/
Brand is not specified.

You can mix modules of the sizes the mboard will accept if they are all compatible.
You can mix speeds of ram, but the ram will always run at the speed of the slowest module. Note that whether the mboard supports 400mhz ram depends on which bios version you have - see the bios update notes.

However the pc2700 333 512mb kingston working fine by itself doesn't necessarily mean it will work fine in combo with other modules - it probably will, but it might not.

Note the different colors of the ram slots - you may have to put certain types of ram in certain slots - see the manual.

Hi
bit of an odd reply Tubesnwires,
"The ram failing a memory test does not necessarily mean it is "key fob material".
so what is it then? clearly it is for that mobo as its dual channel use is over.

i agree theres difference between memory test fail and a mobo incompatibility issue.
re: "which isn't the case here " Op said it is unknown 'brand' i take it , but crucially he wasnt sure hence my suggestion of checking using the utils.

yes i do agree with your other post3 & in my experiance sticking any old ram in pc is asking for trouble.
Hence i suggested checking relevant info 1st, pointless trying to get a pc running on unknowns.

Indi, you have to use matching pair of ram sticks identical capacity to enable dual channel & use dimm 1&3 or 2+3 slots.

Tubesnwires post for the manual is good (&working) esp see page 10.

If the memory he tried is incompatible with that mboard and it does not work in his mboard or it partially works, if a memory test can be run on it and it fails the ram there is an 99% chance there is nothing wrong with the ram - it is much more likely to be incompatible than actually bad - it will probably work fine in a mboard it is compatible with. To throw away or stop using ram because it doesn't pass a ram test is therefore folly! If I did that I would have thrown away half the ram I have encountered! I have not come across a ram module that is actually bad in many years!

"re: "which isn't the case here " Op said it is unknown 'brand' i take it ...."
Oops - I mis-read - I thought he said both were Kingston.

Tubesnwires and 1stepbeyond that's some research you guys have done for me. I have been looking for ages for the type of motherboard and manual. I took back the unknown Ram. Also, your absolutely right about about the 1&3 or 2+3 slots for the ram. 'Memory giant' have the Ram for this motherboard. When I get the Ram added I shall let you guys know.

Thanks,
Unparalleled
