ram slots not working

Specs: Windows xp, amd duo
I have an Asus mobo with amd duo core and I was using 4 memory sticks 1gb each until last week, because my computer stopped working all of a sudden, when i powered it on it was just beeping and not doing anything else screen was blank, I didn't know what to do and I searched for some solutions on the internet with my laptop and read about reinstalling the memory sticks, i did so but it was same i finally got the computer working again except i can only use one stick now, when i put the othet ones, it stops working again, i don't know why but i have only one stick in it now, that is the only way i could get that working, is there anybody can tell me what could causes that?

Try to test each memory separate with memtest http://www.memtest86.com

Have you removed and replaced the RAM while the computer was plugged in?

What is the pattern of the beeps you hear when the computer has all RAM installed?

Follow the suggestion in #1.

i did remove the ram when computer was on while i was trying to fix the computer, the pattern is one short beep and then two short beeps

You may have damaged the memory slots. I suggest you try the one working stick in each slot, one by one. If the RAM works in one slot it should work in all. That should help determine if you ruined the memory slots or possibly the RAM sticks themselves.

To learn what the beep codes mean look at the link below. You can determine what BIOS brand and version by watching the first screens that appear when starting the computer.


Be sure the computer is unplugged or if there is an off switch on the back of the power supply shut off there. Exercise static discharge precautions by discharging yourself on the case just prior to unplugging.
