Today I purchased a 256mb PC-100 SDRAM stick. It is made by Hynix. I installed it correctly into the motherboard but it will not detect it properly , it says it can not find the proper drivers (or drivers not installed) to add memory. I am running on Windows XP and my computer is a HP Pavilion 7940 , and my specs are 1 ghz, 128 mb of sdram , 40 GB HD. The maximum Memory is 512mb so that can not be the problem. To see if it was the slot that was not working properly, I installed a 128mb PC-100 SDRAM stick into the 2nd slot, and the computer detected it and the total was 256mb. I did some research on the Hynix website on the 256mb ram stick that I purchased and it seems that the RAM that they gave me was a PC-133 instead of PC-100 if that makes a difference.
Thank you very much for your time. Please post your suggestions.

"I installed a 128mb PC-100 SDRAM stick into the 2nd slot, and the computer detected it and the total was 256mb."
How can this be? Did you make a typo in the statement?

i mean i did it seperately...to check if it was the slot that was malfunctioning, i placed a 128mb stick into the the 2nd slot, along with the other 128mb stick...and the computer detected it...and i had 256mb.....but then when i took out the 128mb stick in the 2nd slot and replaced it with the 256mb stick...it didnt work...it didnt dtect the 256mb...it just stayed as 128mb.

How about some more info on your system. What CPU & speed? What chipset on the mobo? How many DIMM slots are there? It's possible that the RAM you purchased isn't compatible with your mobo/chipset. Is it double sided (chips on both sides) or single sided?

Try placing the 256 in the first slot by its self. If that works, add the 128 in the second slot.
Some boards require that the largest memory stick be placed in the first socket.

Some of the HP systems require a BIOS flash update to work with 256Mb modules. Check the BIOS level of the system and see if there is a BIOS flash update available for it.

Something other I just encountered:
I just rebuild my old pentium and used old parts from two 486 computers.
On that board only slot1 and slot2 can work with doublesided ram while slot3 and slot4 only work with singlesided ram. Luckily my old 2x16MB have been single side!Out of the above experience, try the 256MB alone in all slots and if it works somewhere try to add the original ram.
BTW:
PC133 Ram works fine with 100MHz. It's exactly the same build as PC100 with the only difference that it also works well at a higher speed of 133MHz!
