Comment:

My computer was running fine with 2 sticks of 256mb DDr RAM, but I wanted an extra 512 to help smooth things out when playing resource guzzling games.
I bought a 512mb stick from the same range as the 256s, put the 512 in the single slot(3) and put the 2x256 in the double slot (1+2).
Everything went smoothly, booted up, as i got to the desktop i had an error saying a program wouldnt load because the station is closing down.
Now I get a long beep followed by 2 short beeps when i turn the computer on, the HDD makes the normal sounds but nothing comes up onte screen. Any ideas what i should try?

No change =(

Would a RAM conflict really stop my computer from starting up at all?

Also is there a site that tells you what the beeps from the PC speaker mean?

You could have mismatched ram www.crucial.com is a good start. You don't have to buy there but,you can find out exactly what works with your system. You could also put your ram back like it was before you got the 512mb stick and see what happens.

I've now tried every combination of 3, 2 and even single sticks! No idea what's wrong here now, no visible damage to any connectors and ive cleaned out the socket with a compressed air can.

What BIOS do you have? One long and two short beeps usually indicates a video problem.

It's actually 1 long and 3 short - means an extended memory failure i believe.

Did you know you can put the ram in backwards accidentally.look closely at your ram connectors for burn marks on the pin tips.>http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1162557,00.asp
