Comment:

Hi, I have a Latitude CPx H notebook computer. Recently the RAM in it went bad. I baught a new module from NewEgg.com, details on this page: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820159401. The laptop would only see 48Mb of the first module, I returned that one for a replacement, now it doesn't see any of it, the power LED comes on and the Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock keys flash multiple times. Could someone please shed some light on this for me? Thanks.

Apparently you're buying "high density" RAM for a system needing low denisty RAM. If it's used in an incompatible system, one of two things usually happens...

1. only 50% of the RAM is recognized. Since your 128MB stick was only showing 48MB, I would assume that 64MB was actually recognized, but 16MB was allocated for the onboard graphics.

2. the RAM isn't recognized at all.

That could be, but it was actually 48Mb being recognized, the system was reporting 40, and I knew that the graphics used 8Mb.

Even then, it sounds like that is a possibility.

How do I tell the difference between the types?

Thanks.
