Comment: I know I can't mix non-ecc and ecc ram sticks together, but if I remove my non-ecc, can I then use an ecc stick. It is a compatable type (pc3200), but I'm unsure about the ecc/non-ecc bit? Anyone know? If you can help I'll be glad to hear from you Cheers Mick

Reply: (edit)not an exact answer. some computers BIOS/Setup has option of turning on / off ECC. If that option is there, then it would suggest it will work with ECC (and i think maybe you could then also mix ecc/non-ecc as long as ecc is set to off). If yours does not have that option then i dont know. In my experience, this option does not seem as common these days as it was on older computers eg. pentium 2 era.

Reply: (edit)Without knowing the make/model of your board, we can't give you an answer. You can probably find that info in your manual or the motherboard manufacturer's website. Why would you want to use ECC RAM anyway? It's generally used in servers & the extra 8-bits used for error correction causes ECC to perform slower than non-ECC RAM.

Reply: (edit)I would try the memory and see if it works. Many of my computers are mixed memory and they work just fine. The memory people should make it simple for us and make all and any of their memory work in the particular slot, ie sdram, ddr etc. I think Kingston is good for making memory compatible but so are many others also. I sometimes think the memory people are the renagades in the computer chain.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the help everyone. I'll look and see if I have the option to turn off ecc. But will keep shopping around for non-ecc, if ecc slows you down. Thank you once again
