Subject: ram bios write protectedOS: win xp sp2CPU/Ram: pentium4 1.8ghz 512mb |
Comment: help neeeded, whilst trying to flash a new bios on to my computer which is a medion with a micro-star ms-6534 mainboard and an award bios version 6.00pg dated 29/09/2001, i recieved a message that the bios ram was write protected. tried every where to find a soloution to this problem, mainboard manual only list a jumper to clear the cmos and the bios setup page doesnt contain any clues, so i can only concluse that they are hidden in some way. can anyone help . thanks madusa

Reply: (edit)There is no such thing as 'Bios RAM'. They might have meant that the BIOS chip is write protected to prevent flashing. Check for a motherboard jumper to enable flashing.

Reply: (edit)Also before you flash, always first ask yoursel: 1. Do I have a valid reason to flash the BIOS? 2. Is this what the manufacturer tells me to do? This will prevent you from regretting the action you are about to undertake. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)It's either a jumper, or a setting in the BIOS itself. Try reading your manual. http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=40&kind=1 Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 768MB PC3200 Asus A9550 128MB/128-bit Gamer Edition WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)k i stand corrected, just tried the link supplied and it only list ami bios, not award bios, read the manual , only says about clearing the cmos by shorting out a jumper with the computer turned off. I have had a suggestion from another source about removing the battery to see if that removes the write protection has anyone any idears on that score. the reason for updating the bios is that it refuses to reconise a new 200ghz hardrive which i purchased and msi say that a bios update would fix this problem madusa

Reply: (edit)The link I posted was to the MSI website listing all the available BIOS for your board. The only possibility I can think of is this is an OEM board made specifically for Medion PC...if that's the case, you can't use the BIOS files available from the MSI website, even it they were Award. How's your German? I did a quick google search & most of the site's relating to Medion PC are in German. Here their homepage: http://www.medion.de/ Did you read over the section of the manual that covers the BIOS settings? Chances are, that's where you'll find how to turn off the write protection. Pulling the battery is the same as using the ClearCMOS jumper. Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 768MB PC3200 Asus A9550 128MB/128-bit Gamer Edition WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)If the only thing you are concerned about is the 200GB HD that your machine do not recognize, it has something to do with the 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA) support. CLICK ME for further info. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)The MS-6534 boards supplied by Medion only accept Medion's own custom version of the updated BIOS binaries. I have successfully updated an MS-6534 with an AMI BIOS using the updated Medion binaries from here: http://www.treiberupdate.de/treiber-download/bios/Medion.html The site is in German, but don't worry - the update won't change the language used in the BIOS setup utility.
