i have a compaq presario v6000 laptop and its built in graphic memory is 64 mb.but a few days ago i added an additional 1gb ram on it along with the old 512mb.and now its showing the total available graphics memory as 256mb.
system video memory 64mb
shared system memory 192mb

i wanted to know if the ram really affects the graphics memory of the laptop?what if i add ram into another laptop that is hp510

The v6000 uses UMA (Unified Memory Architecture) meaning that your 6150 GPU has it's own dedicated memory (64MB) plus it shares some of the system RAM. nVidia calls it "Turbocache". The amount that can be shared is limited by the amount of system RAM installed. The less RAM you have, the less that can be shared; the more RAM you have, the more that can be shared. At some point there is a cap. Check your user manual or the HP website to find out what the cap amount is. Dedicated RAM is always better/faster than shared RAM.

The HP 510 has the Intel GMA900 integrated graphics which uses 100% shared memory. It's performace is considerably slower than the 6150. It doesn't support T&L so it is NOT good for gaming. It doesn't matter how much memory is shared for the GMA900, it's an extremely low end GPU & is only suitable for general use. Basically, it sucks.
