Subject: ram amount wrong
OS: xp
CPU/Ram: 400 128k
Comment:

I have an asus ek motherboard
MEW rev 1.06
I am trying to add ram I got 2 sticks of pc133 bt when I put them in it only recognizes each stick as 128
I tried the ram in another box with a different mobo and it recognizes 256k each
another thing I noticed is that I can't put a third stick of ram in or it seems to "cancel" out the second stick
the mobo manual says it will support 256 sticks with a maximum of 512
I have looked in the bios but I don't want to play around without some better knowledge as there are some settings that may have to be changed there I just don't know which
the manual seems vague on this point
thanks

You may need to flash your bios. that may cure both problems. Can you be more specific about the motherboard? (model number?)

it is an asus MEW
socket 370 Intel 810 motherboard
I hope a bios flash isn't needed
I would just let it stay at 256 insted of flashing

Is your ram single or double sided? Some boards have trouble recognizing high density (single sided) ram modules.

"Your system's motherboard must accept 512MB in each memory slot in order for 'High Density' modules to work properly. As with the 512MB modules, if your system/motherboard does not support 'High Density' SDRAM these modules will only be read as a smaller size. The 'Low Density' modules are built using 16Mbit DRAM technology, this type of module is generally compatible with a wider range of systems."

Have you tried using just sockets 1 & 3?

I've been searching and get conflicting info on the ram setup. didn't find much on the asus site. is ther any other model numbers for the MB?

2 x DIMMs for PC100 Memory

2 x 168-Pin DIMM Sockets Support 8MB to 512MB 3.3V PC100 SDRAM

I could be wrong but I think you can use either or not not both.

I tried the different slots
it needs to be in order, if I do 1 & 3 it only recognizes slot1, I tried 2&3 and it wouldn't boot it just gave me RAM error beeps
I added on of the old 64 meg sticks to the third slot and now it tells me it has 320 megs
Rayman I can't find any other numbers other than what I posted earlier unless there is a different way to find info

Your board is designed for PC100 ram with a max module size of 256 mb. Generally speaking, PC100 is low density. PC133 can be either, but most are high density. It states right in your manual, PC100-compliant SDRAM (supports a maximum of 4 sides).

"Your system's motherboard must accept 512MB in each memory slot in order for 'High Density' modules to work properly"

"...if your system/motherboard does not support 'High Density' SDRAM these modules will only be read as a smaller size"

Apparently you have high density ram...you're out of luck. The only thing you can do is buy the proper ram for your board...or upgrade your board.
