OS: win2k server
CPU/Ram: 2Ghz
Comment:

hi,
we are in the process of upgrading to a new server and was wondering if it was worth shelling out some more bucks and going for RAID 5 or stick to RAID 1? can anyone pls suggest some ad of 5 over 1 cause data can be recovered in both cases of RAID rite!!
thanks in advance!

thanks raincheck, the article was helpful - i have another question though - if a HD fails on RAID 1 will the system have to be shutdown or will the sys run fine on 1 HD till the other is replaced. i know that for RAID 5, the server runs with any of the 2 HD's!!

The system will run until the bad HDD is replaced, depending on the RAID controller you should be prompted immediatly the HDD failure.

Have you made a decision as to which one you are going for? Consider how essential perfect uptime for your server is to you(r) business.

I run 5 servers in the school I work for, 2 of which are Windows 2000 servers with RAID 5 config as I requested for piece of mind.

Also consider redundant PSUs, hot swappable HDDs, etc.

Hope this helps a little.
