Subject: RAID 0 Question.
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
CPU/Ram: Intel C2D 3.78GHz
Manufacturer/Model: Self Built
Comment:

Hi,

I'm new to RAID setups and have just recently got my 320GB X 2 HDD RAID Array runnin. (Using my motherboard's "EZ RAID Backup feature")

I was wondering:

1. What would happen if i were to "disband" the raid array? Would the data that was in the drives still remain?

2. What if i were to move both the HDDs to a different computer, but still make it into a RAID array? Would the data still stay intact?

Thanks in advanced.

Can't say for sure. Some raids are so called soft. Most are real true raid drives but only survive in use on that machine. While others can be moved. I usually slap in a few live linux cds and see how they view it.

I would test it now before you get too much data on it.

To top it off windows will not like it one bit. Any change like that will result in some if not a lot of repairs to the OS.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Generally speaking, a RAID array is used for redundancy purposes. However, RAID-0 has no redundancy...it's advantage is speed. Since a RAID-0 setup "splits" the data across the drives, if you wanted to "disband" the array & retain the data, it would have to be backed up to a 3rd drive 1st. RAID-0 is also risky because if one drive fails, all data is lost.

Aww, that sux. The reason i asked is cause we're talking about 500GB+ of stuff to backup. I mean, I only have one seperate 320GB WDC and one 36.7GB Raptor, but thats it. Guess i might have to buy a new one to backup stuff on.

Wait, what happens if i use a raid 1 setup? Will the data then still be sustained durring a move to a different computer? Also, does Raid 1 combine both storage's sizes together; ex:
I have two 320GB HDDs. If i put them in raid 1, will i get a 640GB total outcome, or 320GB but with mirroring?

Thanks so much for the help so far. :D

Look here for a simple explanation of the different RAID levels.

OtheHill, thx for ure help, but I'm not in search for the explaination of RAID levels. I have a basic understanding in that already. I just need answers to my previous questions.

I have mine set at RAID 0+1 if you have an option to config that way then that would be imo the best option. You get the speed of Raid 0 and the backup capabilty of Raid 1.

my controller doesn't have RAID 0+1 capabilities AFAIK. It does have RAID 10, however that requires 4 drives which i cannot afford, and do not posses.
