Subject: Radeon 9800 pro AGP 8X setting

CPU/Ram: 2.8 HT 800FSB
Comment:

I have a radeon 9800 pro installed on my ASUS K8V Deluxe motherboard... When i installed the catalyst drivers and software i noticed the AGP setting in the SMARTGART was "OFF" when i tried to set it at 4X or 8X as soon as i re boot, it turns it's self off again. I understand that it sets at the setting most stable for the OS but why is it setting at OFF ? On my ASUS P4C800-E Intel 875 motherboard it sets at 8X AGP no problem... Can anyone help me with this ?

My game Call of Duty crashes when i force set the AGP at 4X or 8X on the 9800 pro only on the Athlon 64 3400 system i have with the ASUS K8V motherboard but works great with the P4C800-E on the Intel chip ? I'm baffled !

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

~Thomas

Have you checked and see if it is enabled in BIOS? You might need to update/flash your current bios in order to make things work properly.

It has the latest bios update. It's very strange. Actually its my best friends PC and we spent mega bucks, i really want to set it up nice and the AGP thing is a real drag because it does seem to be impacting the performance.

I am sorta lost, you said you have a 2.8Ghz CPU 800FSB, (assuming it's a P4) but you also said that you have an Asus K8V deluxe motherboard, which supports Socket 754 AMD Athlon64 Processors. Information you given is not compatiable with each other.

Just for your knowledge, Asus K8V deluxe motherboard only supports 8X. if it's set manually, it's 8X AGP already.

Jim,

I was simply comparing the way my Intel worked compared to my Athlon 64 w/ K8V Deluxe... The ASUS K8V Deluxe w/ Athlon 64 is the one giving me problems... The AGP settings will not set at 4 or 8X..... The GC is a 9800 pro. I was wondering what could be the reason ?

If you had previously been using a different graphics card in this system you need to uninstall any reminants of the old drivers. Including the AGP driver. ATI has instructions for installing thier products. They MUST be followed. Did you have DX9 installed prior to installing the ATI software? Got to ATI download pages and click on previous versions. ATA maintenence utilities. Download these two programs: cat-uninstaller.exe and smartgart-uninstall.exe. You also need a registry cleaner. Download regcleaner, find it here: www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm - 19k
You will need to change your display type to STD. VGA. These instructions are for win98, I thnk they are the same for XP. GO> Start> Settings> Control panel> Display>
Settings> Advanced> Adapter> Change> Next>
select "display a list ***"> select "show
all hardware"> select on left (Standard
display types)/ on right standard display
adapter> Next> Yes
After you are running with Std. VGA run those two ATI utilities. Then run the registry cleaner. Do not reboot inbetween these operations. After running the registry cleaner, shut down. Now, follow ATI instructions for installing thier product.

Ok, someone also told me to reset the AGP voltage to 1.7. They said this will correct the AGP problem for the ATI 9800 Pro.

I'll give it a try and post the results.

Thank you very much.

Nope, it didn't work.... I don't get it !

After downloading the ATI Catalyst drivers and re-starting, the AGP in the "Smartgart" sets Fastwrite to "OFF" and also turns off AGP 4X and 8X.... I tried resettint the AGP voltage to 1.7 instead of 1.5 like i was told but it didn't work. I'm stumped !

Hi, I had the same problem awhile back & fixed it more or less the way OtheHill had told you. It was awhile ago when I had done this, but if I remember right, this is what I did.

First I went to http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300 to download and install the VIAHyperion4In1v4.51.zip drivers (they are required for the motherboards chipset).

Then I went to add/remove programs and removed the current graphic drivers. Next goto device manager & uninstall the card. Then I rebooted the computer.

When the found new hardware wizard started, I just cancelled out of that and put in the disk that came with the Radeon 9800 and installed the Catalyst software suite. Then that was about it, I followed the instructions after that & I was able to set the video to AGP x8.

Maybe the original video card wasn't removed properly or the drivers for the K8V's chipset weren't installed first. Or, (my personal favorite) the computer just messed up! But if this doesn't work, try carefully following the instruction book that came with the Radeon 9800. Like OtheHill had said,
"ATI has instructions for installing thier products. They MUST be followed." Good luck, I hope everything works out.

Thank you very much tigger...

My buddy is going on vacation and i told him I'd spend some time at his apartment trouble shooting the graphics problem while he's gone. Your instructions will definetly help, I'll try what you say and I'll let you all know what happenes. Thanks again.
