Hopefully somebody has an idea...

I've got a new Radeon 7000 PCI card with TV-out. The problem is that as soon as the computer starts, the picture on the TV is very bad, scrolling up very fast as if the refresh rate was way off.

Any ideas what I could do to fix this? The OS hasn't even started yet so I'm not sure what options there are, if any.

Thanks!

Hi Dr. Nick

Somewhere under the 'displays' tab (where you enable TV-out) is a setting to tell your graphics card what country you're in. It needs to put out a slightly different signal for different countries.

e.g. In the UK it needs to be PAL-I.

By default it's set to PAL-A (I think), which only gives me a black and white picture till I change it to 'I' .

Thanks for the reply.

That was my first thought, that it was set to use some format of PAL. My TV is NTSC so the effects I'm seeing correspond I believe to sending it a PAL signal.

The problem is that the computer I'm going to use it on won't be running Windows. If I put the card into a Windows machine and configure it, then put it back into this machine, do you think it will retain the new settings?

Thanks.

i do not believe the card itself can retain any settings if taken out of one computer & put in another. The settings are saved in the graphics card software which is on the computer hard disk.

While it's true that the card is configured using drivers installed on a system, it's also true that more recent cards have non-volatile memory built in that allows them to be configured, and to have that configuration saved and available before the drivers get a chance to load, much like a computer's BIOS starts it before the OS takes over.

For example, this program claims to allow you to modify the default settings for frequency and format. By changing the settings on the card it should be possible to make it use NTSC as the default setting.

I guess I'll just have to try it and see :)

Thanks.
