Today we decided to upgrade from an ATI Rage 128 video card to an ATI Radeon 7000 64 MB video card. We went to add/remove programs and removed all the old card's info. Then we installed the new card.
The system is showing that the Radeon 7000 card is there, and that it doesn't have any conflicts when I look up the info. in the hardware window, but the Hydravision software says that the ATI driver is not there, and so does the computer when I turn it on.
I know all video drivers must be uninstalled first in order to make this work. I see under display drivers that our computer has an Intel(r) 82810E Graphics Controller on it. I am not sure what this does and I am afread to disable it. Would this be the problem? Neither the Intel nor the Radeon show any "conflicts"...
I also find that in the ATI folder on my computer, I can only locate the startup programs etc. for the OLD driver, despite having supposedly uninstalled all the old driver's data.
After 9 hours of messing with this, a visit to the ATI site (not helpful), and 3 calls to CompUSA tech support...we need help!
Thanks,
Mel

You obviously have a computer with integrated graphics. If your display is still listed as the Intel then you must still have the monitor connected to the Intel display port. Move the monitor cable to the new ATI card. Do this with the computer shutdown. Reboot and the new card should work.

Thanks for trying to help OtH...I tried that but then I had no picture at all!
This has to be the most frustrating thing I've ever encountered.
Mel

With the cable plugged into the Intel...yeah, it's normal. But when I switch the cable to the Vid. card...nothing. It's black. The computer runs like normal...but I can't see anything.
Mel

so you have been running intel instead od ati all this time, check motherboard manual for a jumper on motherboard or a setting in bios to disable onboard video
david

I'm sorry...I am not extremely well with computers...is there a way you can repeat that in layman's terms?
Thanks,
Mel

As ddp59 indicated you may need to disable the integrated video. This usually isn't the case but each system is different. One thing that is confusing me is this. You state that you removed an ATI Rage 128 card and replaced it with the ATI 7000. Was the monitor connected to the Rage 128? If not, then you were never actually using it. If so, then disabling the Intel graphics isn't necessary. If that is the case then the new ATI card isn't installed properly. Go to Device manager and look to see if the new ATI card shows up there. If it shows, look under properties to see if it is working properly.

I guess the Rage 128 was never plugged into the monitor as you say OtH.
But, the new ATI card DOES show in the Device Manager. It doesn't show anything wrong with it. It doesn't show any conflicts. It says it's running correctly. That's what's driving me insane here.

There is a place in Device manager, when you click on the different devices, that would allow me to disable the Intel...but I am scared if I do that...I may lose the capability to see anything on the monitor completely.
At least right now my computer is functioning as it was.
We have uninstalled the ATI stuff 3 times and re-installed...
I've been at this for alomst 10 hours now. It's nearly 1 a.m. so I may have to stop and go to sleep and check back here tomorrow.
But as far as the computer is concerned...it's installed, but it won't detect. For instance, the HydraVision says this when I click on it:
This message has appeared to inform you that HydraVision will only run when an ATI display driver is loaded. An ATI display driver is not currently detected on your system.
This is where I say, "WHA?"
Thanks for trying to help,
Mel

In device manager check properties for the ATI card and see what is listed for the driver. If I understand you correctly there are two displays listed. Intel and ATI 7000. Is that correct? Is this ATI card an AGP card or a PCI card? There are multiple PCI slots on the MBoard. Only one AGP slot or maybe none. AGP will be the top slot.

I had a similar problem with a Radeon 7000. Turned out the Intel AGP driver for the motherboard hadn't been loaded properly. Reinstalled it and the Radeon was OK. Don't know if this will solve your problem but it's worth looking into.

I forgot to mention that I had to download several different drivers from ATI before I found one that worked with most stuff. I couldn't find one that worked with everything. The one I ended up with was 4.13.7189 running under Win98SE. Dunno if it will work with XP though.

The card is a PCI card. We currently have it in the bottom PCI slot...where the old Rage card was. Above that is our modem and above that is our Soundblaster card.
I don't know if the order is wrong...or would that even matter?
Yes, there's ATI listed along with the Intel Graphics Controller under Display Drivers.
As for the Intel...I don't know how I'd reinstall that. When I got this computer I am assuming that was there...I don't have any sort of disc for it. Would I go to the website to get driver updates or something?
I downloaded the driver from ATI's website for XP and tried using that to make it work last night...it didn't make a difference though.
That's all the information I have for now.
Thanks for all of your suggestions. It's pretty hard to help a person when you can't see what's going on. And it's pretty hard to do this stuff when you've never done it before!

Two things to try. First thing is to enter the BIOS screens at the startup. There should be instructions on the correct keystroke during the POST, prior to windows starting. Once inside the BIOS screens you will need to look for a few options. The first is one that chooses AGP or PCI as the first display. You want to set it as PCI first. Next, you want to see if there is an option to disable the onboard graphics. Next look for an setting to assign the amount of memory alloted to the onboard video. If you find the latter two don't change them just now. Now you can save and exit. Let the computer boot into windows. Now go to this site and read this Frequently asked question. Just copy this address and then paste it into the address bar of your browser. http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4061.html

Mel did you ever get you card to work? Im having the exact same problem as you!!! except I even disabled the intel and it still says ati driver not installed for the radeon! It must be something on the motherboard that needs disabled to!

I know this is an old post, but just incase anyone is still active, I have this same ATI board in my system. When I upgraded to XP I didn't have to install any drivers. Windows took care of it all for me. The ATI 7000 is running just fine. I believe the problem is that the onboard graphics need to be disabled, as stated earlier. ANd you will have to make the PCI board the active video controller. I hope you get it going. But one question I wanted to ask was, "Why didn't you try to get the Rage board to work?"
