My P3 Gateway PC has a Quantum CX 6.8 GB hard drive in it, as it’s very quiet (for the time it was built) I had a look to see if I could buy a quantum – I can’t see any on the web, have they gone out of business? If so can anyone recommend a quiet cheap IDE drive please?

I believe they were acquired by Maxtor. Quiet, cheap, realiable HDD... take a look at the Samsung drives at NewEgg. Very inexpensive, quiet, and come with three year warranties.

My vote goes to Maxtor as well. I have used them for years and am impressed with their longevity, and they are nearly silent.

I like Seagate myself. They are fast, quiet and very reliable. Plus they have a 5-year warranty!

go with whatever is cheapest(name brands mind you) from newegg.com or tigerdirect.com or your favorite place. any drive should suit you as of all the ones i have dealt with are not loud. they all should last a long time if not allowed to overheat. my preference is WD, but i would buy any brand. even check out ebay, you can find an old HD for real cheap(but then again an older drive may be a little louder, but not much, but be careful who you buy it from on ebay though.
