My friend is gonna give me some ram today, 256 mb pc-133. Currently I have one 256 mb pc-133 and one 64 mb pc-100, totaling at 320 mb. To the best of my knowledge the 256 mb is being slowed down by the 64 mb. Which would be faster if i add more ram? 512 mb at 133 or 576 running at 100?

Yes, you are right. The 64MB stick is going to slow the others down. So taking out the 64MB will speed things up a bit. I don't know if you'd notice a difference or not though.

If you have your BIOS set to auto detect the RAM speed, it will take the lowest rated of the RAM sticks (in your case, PC100), & run them ALL at 100mhz. This will decrease performance because your CPU runs at 133mhz FSB...512mb of PC133 running in sync with your 133mhz FSB CPU is much better than running 576mb at 100mhz with the CPU at 133mhz FSB.

However, the new stick of 256mb PC133 may not work in your system...you won't know until you try it. You may encounter the "high density" issue that is common with older boards & newer RAM.

Regardless of what happens, remove the PC100, it's holding you back....

To add just a little to the above excellent comments. I think you might have the idea that more RAM automatically speeds up your system. This is not true. It will only speed up your system if you didn't have enough RAM previously.

But even if you had enough RAM previously, more RAM can speed up your system by using the extra RAM for a RAM drive!

Keeping all of your temp directories on a RAM drive will speed things up quite a bit.

Search for RAMDRIVE for more info..
