I have two questions vis-a-vis Dual Channel DDR2 memory.

1. On certain PC's today (specifically notepads) I notice that the manufacturers are offering 3 GB's and 32 bit operating system. Since the memory is comprised of a single stick of 1 GB, and another stick of 2 GB, will these machines truly run in Dual Channel mode as they are obviously not the same?

2. If I am running XP Pro in 32 bit mode, and I install 4 GB of Dual Channel DDR2 memory, I realize that only 3 GB will be recognized, however, will the PC run in Dual Channel mode?

In order to run memory in Dual Channel mode the device must have TWO memory controllers.

Do you know if the device in question has two memory controllers? I would tend to think not but I don't know.

edit for clarification

The controllers can be on chip or on a bridge, still the same result.

This question has been beaten to death ... see below quote & link from roughly three years ago.

"I have said this way too many times, you DO NOT need to have 100% identical memory sticks to run in Dual Channel mode, that is a feature of the board and not the sticks. While it may be the ideal to do that, it is not a fundamental criteria, the sticks do not even have to be of the same size or manufacturer, but you definitely want sticks of the same speed."

There are even some oddball motherboards out there that support Dual Channel mode with three memory modules when applicable, but hardly are you going to ever run into those these days.
