Subject: Questions on building a new PC OS: win xp CPU/Ram: P4 1.7, 768 mb ram

Comment: Right now i have a dell 4400 and i have done numerous upgrades to it. i want to get a new motherboard, a stronger processor (currently have a 1.7 P4), better cooling system, and a new case. There's nothing else i really need to buy because i just bought a new graphics and sound card and a DVD drive. and a couple months ago i bought more DDR ram and a HD. i just want to use all my parts from my old computer and use it on the newer motherboard. As long as everything is compatable what kind of problems might i run into? Will i have to delete everything on the HD? If so what is the best way to go about this? If i have to delete the OS will i be able to install it with the windows XP 'reinstallation CD' that came with the Dell computer? Also, can anyone give me any suggestions on a motherboard or atleast what brand i should look at? any help would be grately appreciated.

Reply: (edit)Once you put the new motherboard in you'll have to do a repair install of xp. If you don't windows won't detect the motherboard right. Then you'll just have to download all the windows updates again but everything else on your harddrive will stay.

Reply: (edit)As long as you are getting a new case, psu and motherboard, you should not have a problem using your memory, dvd etc. The dell disk will not work without a dell motherboard. I do not think the hardrive with all the dell crap loaded will work in a new system. Dell does not include drivers for other boards in its version of windows. Your best bet is to format it before you take apart the old system and purchase an OEM windows xp with the motherboard/processor/case. You can get an oem windows xp for around $75.00.

Reply: (edit)OEM for a custom built system is the full version but does not include the box or manuals. It is sold at a discounted price. You need to purchase the components for a new pc (or most of one, like in your case) to legally buy the OEM software (licensing thing). An OEM from another manufacturer (Dell, for example) may have modifications for that particular brand. This means it may not have all options and may include other 3rd party programs. Yes, you would lose everything so you have to back up all your data before formatting.
