you have adware programs installed on your computer, or, you're going to websites that have pop-up ads and you don't have a pop-up blocker tool to stop them. WinXP SP2 has anhanced pop-up blocking tools, or you can download Yahoo's or Google's pop-up blocking tools. But, if your computer already has adware/spyware, you're going to have to remove those using other removal utilities, like SpyBot, or AdAware, etc...
If you don't have a firewall that your computer is connected to, or running... you'll be vulnerable to this sort of thing.

I have pop up blockers installed. Firewall, current AdawareSE 7 spybot S&D. I am talking about pop ups appearing right here at Computing.net.

ohhh....right here on this website? Hmm....I've been here several times in the last week and haven't encountered any. My pop-up blocker will give me an audible alert when it blocks a pop-up, and so far, nothing seen here on Computing.net.

I'm here all the time and I have two popup blockers working. This just started a short time ago. I haven't downloaded anything this morning but I did check msconfig and found one entry I am unsure of. TPP auto loader. I will Google this one.

OK TPP auto loader is for an External USB drive I have so that is OK. Ran Adaware and got a new defination dated 4/15 found the usual stuff.

I had this problem a few months ago on another system. It got formated and installed a new fresh OS on it so i can't tell you how to solve your problem...:(
It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...

The popup issue appears to have been short lived. Five popups here in the span of 5 minutes and then it stopped. can't say what was going on but I haven't had a popup in ages.

Hi OtheHill
I had the same experience yesterday (same date as you).
I use a tabbed browser. I saw nothing strange in the Task Manager, but when I closed the browser and then reopened it with Computing.net they had disappeared.I believe I picked them up on another site in another window, and then something (possibly the ads) on this site made them appear. My built in PopUp-stopped did not manage to stop them.
Possibly a new kind of PopUps.

That makes some sense. Although I was annoyed I sensed the popups were related to ads on this site. One was for sure. I ran adawareSE right after and there was a new defination, which was strange because I had just updated a couple of days prior. Maybe that took care of it.
