The Core 2 Duo is a total redesign of Intel's CPU architecture. Among other things, it's much more efficient than the P4 so it can accomplish more work at a lower GHz rating. The C2D also runs at a higher/faster FSB...usually 1066MHz or 1333Mhz compared to 800MHz for the P4.

The difference is even more dramatic with the benchmark that highlights the time to convert a 115 page Powerpoint doc to PDF. The 3.4GHz Processor takes over 4 and a half minutes, while the 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo Processor takes less than 3 minutes.
