Question about back up drive

OS: WinXP
CPU/Ram: 2GHZ/2GB

I received a Seagate 'Freeagent' back-up drive. Can I just use it as a regular external hard drive or am I forced to use their "back up" software. I don't want to open it until I'm sure.

I dont want a "back up" just an external drive. Even if it means reformatting it soon as I open it.

You don't need to use the software. You can use it as an external HDD.
