Comment: I'm planning to add a new hard drive to the computer I'm using right now. It's been having problems so want to reformat the current hard drive I have right now. The problem is that I have a lot of pictures and music files that I want to save. I have an extra hard drive, and want to know if I could quickly install it, then move all the files I need then keep it on that drive then format the drive they were on before. Will that be safe, will formating the previous drive effect the second drive I add? Thanks

Reply: (edit)It will be fine. Just make sure that all the files have been copied correctly. I would open each one to be sure. Also, make sure you are formatting the correct drive. While the old drive should remain c: in dos, you can use the "dir" command for a list of folders and files to be sure. What you want to do is easy and there are no tricks to it. As with anything computers, you can screw something up if you are careless.

Reply: (edit)You will want to wait for some more expert advice as well but in general, You can use an ME "emergency boot disk" floppy (you have made one with your ME right??) Make very sure of the drive letter when you format the 2nd Hdd (you can even remove the master and use the floppy disk to format 2nd drive(put in as temp master)-(mind the jumper positions when swapping). Then reinstall master (as master) and switch 2nd (now formatted ) drive to slave position. Copy personal files to slave (2nd hdd). Then remove it from box (for added saftey)and reformat Master and reinstall O/S. You should be able to reinsert slave and all should be OK. What make system do you have?

Reply: (edit)Do you now have 4 IDE devices taking up all standard spots (2 masters & 2 slaves)? (ie: hdds, zip drive, cd drives)
