My friend wanted me to check out her system. No manuals to go by and after setting it up I have 2 cords that branch off the main. They are for the audio and mic ports but which is for which?? One is Purple. The other is Orange. ????

Follow the colors the back of the Case.

Play your least-favorite song, turn up speakers full blast, ensure windows audio is turned up, plug speaker cable into both until it makes noise. Plug the mike cable to get a special explosion effect when you plug it into the speaker port, then plug the speaker into the speaker port.

CABLES, WIRES, but not Cords ???

Do they plug into another hardware device? Do they plug into the back of the PC? Or internally, into the mobo? Most important of all, what do the END CONNECTORS look like? Round - Rectangular - Several Pins - Only a Jack - Etc. ???

If it is for the sound on the back of the computer, on many ATX mobos the sound jacks are ligned up vertically, three of them, from top to bottom. The TOP jack is most commonly the one for the speakers. I have no idea why you would have TWO audio cables remaining, unless the second one is for a separate input device, or for the sound itself - from the CD/Rom player to the mobo or soundcard.

If you accidentally plug the speaker cable into the wrong jack in the back, that's normally not a big deal. I've seen quite a few people do this - and everything worked fine afterwards anyway.

Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Are you sure they are audio and mic? Are they labeled as such? What "main" are they coming from? Make sure they arent coming from the power supply before you start plugging them in just anywhere. Supply a little more information as to where they come from first.Good Luck.
