I decided upon getting a vid card after peoples responses about not being able to make my "moped" a "harley" via overclocking :)

So, I know I'm limited to 4x because of my motherboard, so should I only 4x and avoid any of the 8x agp video cards? They are a lot cheaper (4x), but I want a decent card and wondered if I'm losing anything by avoiding the 8x cards [or if they wouldn't work for that matter].

If not I don't mind buying the best 4x there is, but don't know which 4x is the best if thats what I'm stuck with!

ps: right now I have a nvidia geforce 4 mx420 PCI and its overclocked 14%, I aimed a fan at it. I need to see realllllly good improvement for games like delta force, warcraft 3 (it runs in 800x600x32color max), Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Ravenshield, and Medal of Honor. Not to heavy duty games, but I want MAXIMUM game threshold ability.

If your mobo is limited to 4x AGP then you will definately not benefit from any 8x card. I'm not all that familiar with 2x/4x only cards to make a suggestion. However, the higher the Mb's the better performance. 128Mb as opposed to 64Mb or 256 as opposed to the 128.

you will definately see an improvement over any PCI graphics card. The card can only go as fast as the bus it's riding on. AGP is way faster. A 4x card in 256 flavor is going to be hard to find, I don't think they even exist. You may need to get a 4x/8x card for 256.

Just because your slot only supports 4x doesn't mean you cant use an 8x card. True, you wont get to take advantage of the 8x bus speed, but you will still get a decent card. There arnt any decent 4x only cards that I can find.

ANYTHING agp will be better than your pci card. Yes, you will see a huge improvement.

First of all any 8x card currently on the market, besides 8x Pro cards, will work on a 4x AGP slot. Also, if you ever want to upgrade your system to an 8x mobo you will be kicking yourself for staying with a 4x card. From what I have seen the Geforce4 is one of the best 4x cards out there. If you're low on money the FX 5200 is very cheap, runs at 8x, comes in 256mb versions, and is much better than a Geforce4. I myself upgraded from a Geforce2 to an FX5700 Ultra and the improvements were monumental. So if you make an upgrade at all don't hesitate to go for an 8x card.

I probably am not going to update my computer for a long while, and when I do I can buy another video card. I'm currently looking at the top of the line 4x video cards including Nvidia ti4600 and either Radeon 8500 or Radeon 9000? They seem to be the best of the 4x. Any comments about these cards?

Ok I compared e-bay prices (ya i know...) and it seems that radeon 9700 prices 8x/4x is going for same price as the ti4600. Which would win and by how much if I go for the running under 4x) Radeon 9700 or the Nvidia Geforce 4 ti4600.

As long as it says 8x/4x it will work on my 4x right? (Just confirming!)

As long as the manufacturer of the video card says 8x/4x you will be ok as for someone on ebay you better refer back to the manufacturer.

I'd look at newegg.com if your in the us. cheap prices and at least their cards are new and you can RMA one if needed easier then dealing with ebay.

Do you know by chance... Which would win and by how much if I go for the running Radeon 9700@4x or the Nvidia Geforce 4 ti4600 @ 4x. Also under consideration is the Geforce FX 5800 8x/4x.

I understand Toms Hardware comparison but what am I getting for a 4x card in reality since thats all my mobo supports.
