When you say old, how old do you mean? Does your power switch have an on and off position or is it just a normal push button. If its quite old you may have an old AT system, in which case you will have to manually switch it on and off, if you want to make it so that when you click shutdown it turns itself off then you will need a new mobo and psu, but this usually brings along a new CPU and RAM

Can you clarify exactly what is happening? What happens when you shut It off? It is hard to tell exactly what you mean from the way you wrote this message.

i get this too with one of my other other pc's
what he means is...normally when you click shut down, the pc will shut itself down normally and everything will turn off as normal. On certain pcs when u click shut down, the screen goes black and a message comes up saying " it is now safe to turn off your computer" and you have to press the power button to turn off the pc altogether.
the funny thing is...its only ever started doing this when i changed from windows millenium to xp pro
i dont mean to hijack the thread but it would be interesting to find out what the remedy is.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

.. but if it is an AT power supply rather than a modern ATX, that's just how they work (for the mostpart)

If your old system has an AT PSU, the power switch will have an actual "ON" & "OFF" position. If this is what you have, your system is functioning normally.
