Hi.

I have recently been having problems with my power supply , in short it was dying (unable to maintane voltages , powering off for no reason , video card problems , computer not turning on) So I took it out it was a 300Watt PSU

I had a 250Watt PSU in another system that I wasn't using so I put that in.

Just wondering if this is a good idea or not?

AMD 2100XP chip Asus A7s333 mobo
1 hard drive
1 dvd/r/w
2 network cards
On-board sound
ATI Radeon 9200 Video card
2 Chassis Fans

Nothing on the USB ports , maybe a printer in the future.

Think 250watt can handle this baby , atleast for 6 more months.

Thanks

You can calculate your system's approximate power consumption here:

I have heard a lot of people in the past say that you should not dream of using a athlon xp cpu with less than 300w cpu, but the power calculators usually show 250w is fine (I have not tried the one suggested) and I have also seen PCS about the same as yours with 250w PSUs in them which work fine.
If yours works fine I would leave it as it is.
But most would say that you cant just judge a psu by the power rating label, there are good quality 250w PSUs and poor quality 350w PSUs

250W is OK provided it has adequate amperage on the +12v rail. For a socket A system, it's generally recommended to have 15A or higher but considering your specs, you can probably get away with less.

Seams to be working ok for a week or so now.

Thanks for the info

I plan to either replace this PC or atleast get a new PS in the winter anyways.
