Subject: PSU problem!Please HELP!OS: Win XP 32 bitCPU/Ram: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ /512K |
Comment: Hi there. I got a brand new system with the following configuration: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ /512KB Cache/2000 MHzFSB/Socket 939 2 * 512 MB DDR TRANSCEND RAM 400 MHZ MSI K8N SLI Platinum M/B - nForce4 SLI - Socket 939 XFX GeForce 6600 graphics Card 256 Mb Memory Western Digital Sata 7200 rpm 80gb HDD.Benq Dual Layer DVD Writer. I've installed XP Prof.( 32 bit), but I am unable to install any drivers. Inserting a driver CD causes the system to stop, and restart. Double clicking the CD has the same effect. I've been unable to install anything beyond the motherboard drivers. I was able to install the sound drivers though.I also managed to play and audio cd from the cd rom.But everything else, any cd of any kind just makes the system restart. I havnt been able to put my rams in dual channel mode cause it seems to make my system restart over and over again. My SMPS(Navtech) is 450 watts but is only 20 pins instead of 24 pins. This is what MSI recommends- • Both power connectors, JPWR1 (24 Pin) & JPWR2 (4 Pin, for CPU Power ) must be attached to this model to ensure operation of the Mainboard. • A Power Supply of 450 watts, or above, is highly recommended for system stability. • ATX 12V power connection should be 18A or greater. • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. in my case as i mentioned it is only 20 pin instead of the 24 pin. and the 12v power supply shows 10A beside it in the sticker of the smps. Well, after doing incessant search for the proper psu i went in to buy one...but would you believe it they did not have single one which matches the specs(Calcutta)??antec was available in only one shop but way over my budget.I found one server class psu-i need your advice on that.It is from a company called e-life and is 600 watts.the +12v rail has 25A power and the +3.3v has 30A.what i want to know is that if i buy this psu, will it fry my system???this is the only one available other than the antec.other 500 watts psu that are available either do not have the 24 pin or end up not having 18A in the +12v rail.My motherboard needs at least 18A in the +12v rail.I am deeply worried about this and i would be very greatfull if you could provide any feedback on this.PLEASE help me out. Reply: (edit)The weak PSU is definitely your problem but I don't know what to tell you about buying parts in Calcutta...lol. Your system will only use as much power as it needs so if you get a 600W PSU & your system only needs 300W, that's all it will use. The amperage on the +12v rail is what's critical. You could probably get by with a decent 350W, 380W, 400W, 420W, etc PSU, provided you meet the minimum amperage requirement on the +12v. If possible, try to get one with the 24-pin main connector rather than using an adapter. Are there any online sites that you can order from? Reply: (edit)Have you tried it with a different CD ROM or DVD cooker? How is the optical drive set on the IDE?

Reply: (edit)Well as it turns out there arnt many sites that will let me buy from calcutta.thats the problem.one thing i wanna know-although i aint worried about the wattage(the msi website says a minimu of 450 watts is required for this motherboard),but i am worried about the fact that this particular PSU's amp is higher than what my devices need.It wont fry my system will it??i wanna play games with my comp not play bad chef! ;) as for the other thing-i havnt tried with other drives but this is a problem that has to do with the PSU i know this more or less due to one reason.this drive is running fine in my other system and the ide cable is also from the older system.the master slave has been assigned through the bios. Many thanks for your posts -if you have more things to say i would be very gratefull.i just need to be sure that by buying that server class PSU i am not putting my system in my cooking list. Reply: (edit)"this drive is running fine in my other system and the ide cable is also from the older system.the master slave has been assigned through the bios." Try a new 40 pin 80 wire IDE cable. Put the optical drive at the end of the cable and jumper the drive "master". Connect the drive to the primary IDE of your MOBO. I wonder if this will solve the problem stated in your original post. Intel810: Athlon64 CPUs can run 32 and 64 bit OSs.

Reply: (edit)tamalsen, Your PC will only use what it needs...you could have a 5000W PSU with 100A on the +12v rail, but if your PC only needs 400W & 18A, that's all it will use. Problems occur when you need 18A & only have 10A available. ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP2
