Have you ever noticed how the guts of a PSU are so when you install the thing the heatsinks are down and the circuit board is up? Even with forced air cooling, when the fans slow down the heat climbs back up to the circuit board. Could be a contributing factor as to PSU failures.
My idea is to gut a PSU and pop rivit or screw the top of the heat sinks to the top inside of the case. Making the top of the case one big heat sink. I would line the inside of the case top with a thin thermal blanket to keep the heat from comming back in to the case. As for the ac plug and switches, I would cut the panel off the PSU box and mount it up as it would normally go. A liberal application of heat shrink tubing for safety and appearances and then enclose it in plexi. My question is since the power supply is grounded to the comp case to start with would directly mounting the heat sinks to the case pose a problem?I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Hey Seti,
Personally I wouldn't go stuffing around inside a PSU. I have come across instances with live heatsinks! Also some transistors connect the emittor to the heatsink. Grounding either of these (uncommon) setups would not be a good idea!
It's long been a gripe of mine that graphics cards also have their main cooling underneath!

Rimfire is correct about live heatsinks (espacially on power rails). Don't know if it is on PSU's, but I would definitely find out before connecting it to a case which is usually (if not always) connected to ground.
We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

Maybe just flip it inside the psu case and just use some stand offs for a motherboard. The ac connector wires are long enough. Only problem is when you do that the connector wires wind up on the other side. But I do own a pair of tin snips...

Pointless as always. I thought you'd enjoy the dropkick of the back of the ute on the freeway style of modding!
From what I can gather, that bloody wreck works!

Yeah I saw another one on a modding type forum that had been run over by a car then beaten with a hammer and a wrecking bar. It survived all the abuse and still works. Art deco is alive and well...
