My psu fan is verry loud and I have enough other fans(1 on cpu,1 on window in middle,1 between my cdrom and psu).
All I wanna know if the fan in my psu is for cooling the psu itself or just for the system
if its for the system I wanna try to turn it off and measure my temps and if they are fine I keep it off

so...

Does a psu needs internal cooling?

btw I have a 300wat fan

The PSU needs the fan inside to cool it down. Do NOT unplug this fan, it is for cooling the PSU down. You can however, replace this fan with a quieter one. This involves opening the PSU up (voids warranty). The wires for the fan may be soldered on, so u may have to resolder wires when replacing the fan. Good Luck.

That would be my choice. It's not worth opening it up and maybe breaking something. I do this all the time with my car :(

Anyway, yeah just save some $ and buy a better power supply. Most high quality psu's have good/quiet fans inside. Late.

i had the same problem here how i fix it :
in the middle of my fan was a label which I peel off , underneeth is a little plug, remove it with a small scredriver, put grease in enuogh to fill the hole and press with a finger to push grease in. put back the plug and label, now is quiet like a whisper! :)))

hehe i dont think thats it cause it always made this kind of noise and its not the kind of noice that it wud make when its broke, its just the air.

oh and btw I allready opened my psu once(I was very carefull though!) and I cleaned all the dust in their with a vacumcleaner(dunno how to spell it)
that decreased the noise a bit :)

anyway, thx for your reply's =)

oh w8 one more question:
wich fan should make the most noise, the cpu one or the psu ?
I have a volcano 9 running at 2000rpm(athlon 1500 ;)) and it makes verry little noise
while the psu fan makes verry much noise compared to cpu fan
and also my psu has a temp controlled fan it says, but I dont know if I can do it manual too, so does anyone know how I shud set a limit to the rpm of that fan ?

THX everyone!

I found a 300w psu for about $24 with tax at pricewatch.com, check there, might be cheaper.
