Subject: PSU fan as Case fan
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Athlon XP
Comment:

I have a PSU fan from a broken PSU and I think it may still work.

I want to attach it to a 4-pin molex connector. There is a 5V red wire and a black GRD wire.

I was wondering how I might do this? What tools are needed? How do I connect it to the molex pins?

Also, are fans designed to be either input or exhaust fans or is that stipulated by the way you fix them to the case.

Thanks

Shaun

The intake/exhaust fan is only the direction you put it in (case fan). Not sure why you want to do what you're doing when case fans run only around $3. Seems like a waste of time to me, but if you really want to do it.

If it ain't broke upgrade it!!!

You might be able to get male and female molex connectors at Radio Shack.

I've used fans from old PSUs as case cooling fans before...it's just a matter of cutting & splicing a couple of wires...

"There is a 5V red wire and a black GRD wire."

That red wire is actually a 12v wire. Weird, I know.

If you have a fan already in the case that has a molex extender on it

you could just cut off the yellow (12v) and black (grd) wires from the extender and splice them to your fan's red (12v) and black (grd) wires.

Or you could connect them by dismantling an existing molex

Or you could just cram the wires into the molex.

No matter what, keep the psu unplugged while you work and insulate everything before plugging things back in and if possible do not destroy a power-supply connected molex. That's why I made the first suggestion - it leaves the power-supply molex's alone.

Thank you johnoh, that's a great help... I hadn't thought about splicing the wire from the extender, I think I will do that. I'm not running short of molex connectors on the PSU yet.
