My mouse port dose not seem to want to work anymore. I've got to the point where i've reinstalled windows 95 and I dont even get a cursor come up on the screen and have to use the keyboard. The mouse that i was using on the machine seems to work fine on any other computer. I've opened the computer up and moved the jumpers to clear the bios, still, no mouse. It's an award bios and i cant find where the ps2 port settings are... i have no idea why it's stopped working.

Had you plugged and/or unplugged the mouse with power on?
If so, you might have blown the port. You're not supposed to do that on a PS2 port.

If the port stopped working for no apparent reason, it's time to put that computer to rest unless you are prepared to work without the mouse.
Chances are you can get another and better computer for next to nothing.
Look in your local paper for sale or give away colums.

You could use a serial mouse, if you can get hold of one.

Do you have the mouse plugged into the correct PS/2 port?
On a desktop mboard, it's the one closest to the mboard and the outside of your case. It probably won't work in the other one, although there are a few older mboards (e.g. some made by Intel) where the mouse or keyboard will work in either port.
Most laptops have a single PS/2 port that is wired such that it can be used for either a PS/2 mouse or keyboard - if you need to use both, there are standard Y wiring adapters that will allow you to connect and use both.

You can always use a USB connected mouse, or a serial port connected mouse instead.

Blown the port... could there be some way to unsolder the 2 ports and put new ones on? im dead set on fixing it, i've unplugged and took the motherboard batt out for the night, may be that will reset something and make it work again... the port couldn't have blown, surely? =(
i could use a serial, usb or no mouse... but no mouse would be rather difficult, im not too sure usb would work with windows 95 serial, (would that be like using them monitor look-a-like ports?) getting hold of one is a another thing i guess
thanks for your replys so far btw

Right,
I changed the keyboard and mouse around, (so the keyboard is in the old mouse port and tht), when i turned the thing on, the keyboard led's lit up... so the port couldn't be dead right?

however the keys did not work when it came up with:

COMS checksum error - Defults loaded

press f1 to continue del to enter setup

A serial mouse plugs into a serial port. Most win9X PCs had two serial ports built in. Serial mice are no longer menufacturered, but you might be able to find some with a Google search or checking with a local computer repair shop.

There are some PS2 mouse to serial port adapters here:

Go into cmos/bios setup and make sure the PS/2 port is enabled.

Using the appropriate keys you can navigate to device manager. Does the PS/2 port show up there? Is there a yellow ! or ? next to it?

I've had a few instances where a corrupted system.ini prevented the mouse from working. You may want to take a look at that.

As far as soldering in a new one, that may be difficult depending on your motherboard. The typical PS/2 arrangement has the mouse and keyboard connectors in the same housing.

I do have some new serial mice if that appears to be the only option.

"There are some PS2 mouse to serial port adapters here..."

The mouse has to be a "combo" mouse - designed and wired up to be used with both PS/2 and Serial ports - in order for a simple adapter to work. If it's not a "combo" mouse the required wiring isn't there in the mouse.
And in addition to that, there are several ways the adapter could be wired - only one way will work with a particular "combo" mouse.

A "combo" mouse comes with an adapter when new.
