Hey,

A few days ago, I got error messages from both Slackware Linux and Windows 98SE that a mouse was not detected on my computer. After investigating the matter on this forum, I found that ps2 ports seldom go bad, thus if there’s a problem, it’s with either the mouse or the BIOS configuration. I’ve checked the mouse on another computer and know that it works fine. I reset the BIOS to its original settings by removing the battery. When I replaced the battery a few hours later, everything seemed fine. Then, suddenly, Windows seemed to lose contact with the mouse. The mouse pointer just disappeared. I hooked up a serial mouse and rebooted. The serial mouse works, but the ps2 doesn’t seem to work at all. My question is: does this sound like an issue with the port? I can replace the mobo if necessary, but I’d like to save myself the trouble if possible. I guess what has me stumped is the fact that one moment the ps2 mouse was fine and the next, it’s dead. Any feedback is appreciated.

If PS/2 mouse support is showing in cmos/bios setup make sure it's enabled. Some mobos have an AUTO setting for it--set it to ON and not AUTO.

Are you using a third party mouse (logitech, etc.) or are any third party drivers loaded for the mouse?

No need to get a new mobo, just stick with the USB mouse...

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...

PS/2 mouse support is not showing in the BIOS. My mouse is a Labtec, but requires no drivers. It was working fine until a few days ago. The serial mouse works fine in Win98, but I've got some configuration issues in Slackware (ah, but that's a problem for another forum). I'll give the USB mouse a try. If it is a port issue, that's probably the easiest way to handle it. Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I'll let you know how I make out.

I installed a USB mouse and all is well. I had to reconfigure my mouse in Slack, but that's a minor issue. I would once again like to thank both of you for your assistance. Computer forums have saved my sanity more than once. Thanks again. You both rock!
