Make sure the cable hasn't come loose.
Try another mouse.

"tried a serial mouse and that didn't work either"

Whatever difficulties you are having with your PS/2 port should not affect a serial port mouse.

In both cases, the port must be enabled in the BIOS, as well as by the Operating System

Check again

.. which will do nothing if the error message is truly being generated by the BIOS.

Looking at one old machine, that option is found under 'Security'

Was this mouse ever working on this machine?

Does the serial mouse work once you get into 95?

Have you checked the contents of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to see if there is anything there relating to a mouse.

I presume the error message is displaying as you are booting the pc into dos prior to W95.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.
