Subject: PS/2 Mouse & Keyboard - hot plug?OS: Win98SECPU/Ram: AMD Duron 950/448 MB |
Comment: Two things: Is it a major problem for me to be hot-plugging my PS/2 keyboard & mouse? I've read that it can damage a motherboard, but I've hot-plugged my PS/2 several times when it fell out of my loose PS/2 port on my laptop without any problems. The second thing is that my cordless keyboard often stops working (several times a day) and I have to reconnect it in order to start using it again. Could this be related to the fact that I've hot plugged the PS/2 port before?

Reply: (edit)yes hot plugging can damage the ps/2 port since you said sometimes your "cordless" keyboard will stop working, and you have to hit reconnect button, have you ever thought maybe its running out of the battery?

Reply: (edit)Erk - I'll make a habit NOT to hot plug PS/2 devices then. As far as the keyboard goes, I've tried replacing the batteries numerous times.

Reply: (edit)The only type of devices that can safely be hot plugged are USB devices. Even they can cause software problems if you just yank them out.
