Subject: Proper way to use HD racks?OS: Win XP ProCPU/Ram: Athlon 1.4/512DDR |
Comment: OK, I'm about to do a new install of XP Pro. I want to use the two drive racks I bought months ago. I also want to mount a DVD+RW & CD-RW. I have three hard drives: 40GB- 5400, 60GB- 7200, 120GB- 7200. One drive is currently in the case & has XP Pro plus a lot of stuff on it (the 120GB). The 60GB slave drive is nearly empty. Can I hook up the drive racks, install the new XP Pro to the 60GB drive (in rack), & use the current 120GB drive as slave- so I can access the data w/o moving it off? Will there be any hassle regarding drive letter assignments or anything else with XP when I plug in the 40GB (via drive rack) with a different op sys on it? Hope this isn't to rambling. I'm a first timer at this rack stuff... Best way to do the racks? I have two. Mom tuppertutor@hotmail.com

Reply: (edit)The only glitch in your setup, is when using H/D racks, it is advisable to have matched H/Ds. If the H/Ds are different in size you have to boot to the Cmos and detect the new drive. You haven't stated the other O/S so it is going to have to be compatable with the Slave drive. You are using XP on one drive so I am assuming you are running it with FAT, I never use FAT so I have no experience with Win98-ME and Xp common files. I am of the idea that you will run into problems with 98_ME reading files on the Slave written by XP. Just a thought, partition the Slave and have one Partition for XP and the other for the second O/S. Hope this helps, good luck!
