Hi Everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have:

1. Asus A7N8X Deluxe w/ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu 65mm 2 Ball Cooling

2. AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton 1.833GHz Socket A Processor Model AXDA2500DKV4D - OEM

3. CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

4. CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

5. SAPPHIRE Radeon 9200SE 128M Radeon 9200SE 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X

When I look in the BIOS (I have just accepted the defaults). It says that I'm running at like 1.05 GHz or something like that. Shouldn't I be running at 1.88? The system is stable but seems slow (for a fresh XP install).

So, what am I doing wrong? How should I set the various related parameters in the BIOS, including the bus settings? What do I need to do?

Thanks for your help and sorry for the slightly uninformed presentation.

Regards,
LL

Possibly you could read the Manual to set the correct FSB ?

Since you have a 166MHz (333FSB) CPU, you should run your RAM at the same bus speed. So even though you have PC3200 (DDR400), you should set it to run as PC2700 (DDR333) at 166MHz.

Try the following BIOS settings:

Under ADVANCED / Advanced Chipset features:

CPU Ext Freq = 166MHz
CPU Freq Multiple Setting = AUTO (or 11.0x)
System Performance = USER DEFINED
CPU Interface = Optimal
Memory Freq = 100%
Memory Timing = Optimal (or set manually to 2.5-3-3-7)
FSB Spread Spectrum = disabled
AGP Spread Spectrum = disabled
CPU Vcore Setting = Menu
CPU Vcore = AUTO (or 1.65v)
Graphics Aperture Size = 128MB
AGP Freq = 66

Hi. I tried these settings:

CPU Ext Freq = 166MHz
CPU Freq Multiple Setting = AUTO (or 11.0x)
System Performance = USER DEFINED
CPU Interface = Optimal
Memory Freq = 100%
Memory Timing = Optimal (or set manually to 2.5-3-3-7)
FSB Spread Spectrum = disabled
AGP Spread Spectrum = disabled
CPU Vcore Setting = Menu
CPU Vcore = AUTO (or 1.65v)
Graphics Aperture Size = 128MB
AGP Freq = 66

The result was:

1. My PC would not boot up - all I got was a solid hard drive light with no monitor or hard drive activity and no beeps.
2. I walked to Barnes & Noble to read about how to reset the CMOS.
3. I returned, took out the battery, etc. and moved the jumpers and reset the CMOS?

Now, I'm back to where I was. I have 2 manuals for this motherboard (Asus A7N8X Deluxe) and I don't see anything about the correct settings. It's very vague, to be honest.

Anyone havea any ideas?

Thanks,
LL

Hi. I did some more experimentation by making the following changes without any issues:

CPU Ext Freq = 166MHz
Graphics Aperture Size = 128MB
AGP Freq = 66

Anyone know what's wrong with the other recommended settings?

Thanks,
LL

If you have the manual, why did you have to walk to Barnes & Noble to read about how to reset the CMOS? It's explained in the manual.

The manual cannot possibly provide the specific settings for your system because there are several dozen possibilities depending on which CPU, RAM, video, etc is used. There is no "one-size-fits-all" BIOS setting, it's simply not possible. All they can show you is what settings are available & you have to configure them to best match the hardware you have installed. I used to have the same board & I'm confident that the settings I provided are correct, unless you're not being accurate about your hardware?

Is your CPU running at the correct speed (1.83GHz, 11 x 166MHz) now or not? If it's still running at 1100MHz, check the CPU_FSB jumper on the motherboard...it's right next to the nForce2 chipset. The jumper cap *should* be on pins 1-2, but it's possible that your's is on pins 2-3.

Spread Spectrum should ALWAYS be disabled, so I doubt that is causing you any grief. The only other possibilty is your RAM or RAM settings. Are you sure you have PC3200?

Generally speaking, you have a decent setup, but that crappy 9200SE video card has got to go!
